Halo Birthday Cake

Everyone is posting about Christmas crafts, projects, decor, and recipes and I'm over here trying to catch up from almost a month ago...
Oh time, you never fail to amaze me.
Anyways, my oldest turned 7 last month and for his birthday this year he requested a Halo theme.
I have come to rely on this method of cake decorating now that I know how awesome the end results will be.
What we have here is just tracing frosting on a coloring page.
I have posted this type of tutorial on my blog before for our Avengers CakeStar Wars cupcakes, and Lego Star Wars cake.
When my son decides on his theme we then turn to Google and find a coloring page we can use.
Click here to see and print out the coloring page we used for this cake.
To start out, take your coloring page and tape some wax paper over it so you can see the design of the picture through the wax paper.
Before when I have used this method I then tape this on top of a piece of glass so I can lift the whole thing up and see underneath it when I'm working, but this time I didn't. I just had the coloring page and the wax paper.
I then took a small amount of frosting, tinted it black, scraped it into a Ziplock bag and snipped a small corner off. I just buy a small tub of frosting, either Betty Crocker or Pillsbury will work fine.
Don't buy the whipped frosting, you want the creamy one because it will harden for you.
I then do any outlining on the picture.
If you look closely you can see that I don't trace all of the lines.
When it's a more intricate picture like this one I will just outline the main parts, and enough to give it some detail.
I then put this in the fridge for a while so it can harden.
Usually over night, because I try to start a day or two in advance.
You can freeze this part as well if you are short on time.
Next, I start filling in colors.
This is why you want the outlining to harden, because you will be filling in the color over the outlining and you don't want it to smudge underneath.
Progress!
Once I am completely done with the picture I put it in the fridge overnight.
I have put it in the freezer for a few hours before as well if I am short on time.
The day of the party I bake the cake and when it's completely cooled I frost the whole thing and then put it in the fridge for a few hours as well.
When I am ready to transfer the image I slide my hand underneath and flip it over onto the cake.
Lightly press the image down into the frosting.
Slowly peel the wax paper back.
I have had it happen a couple of times where the frosting hasn't hardened all the way and it will stick to the wax paper.
If you have time, you can stick it all back in the fridge or freezer to let it finish hardening. If you are running short on time, I will use some of the leftover frosting that's still in the Ziplock bag and fill in the spots that got stuck.
That actually happened on this cake, if you look at the bottom of his leg you can kind of see where I had to fill in a little bit of frosting.
And then add any finishing touches!
Sometimes I have leftover colored frosting and I will draw a design around the edges and then of course write 'Happy Birthday!'
I loved creating this for my son and seeing the joy on his face when we brought it out :)

Thanks for reading!

  1. This is really a great idea to bake cakes at home dear. I keep planning birthdays and other small events for my kids at event space Chicago and I am sure if I will also do something different like this. They will really love it.
