Wall Decor

I love looking through Pinterest and getting inspired by so many different decorating styles and ideas, and I wanted to share my own in hopes that someone else can be inspired too.
I have kind of fallen in love with this look, mostly because almost all of the pieces we used were already ours and they have a little backstory, which I will share.
Between our family room and dining area windows there is a blank wall.
The only thing that separates the rooms is the flooring, it changes from carpet to hard floor.
We have high ceilings which also adds to the large blank look.
I had a couple of ideas floating around on what I wanted to put there, but it took me forever to finally decide and get it done.
I knew I wanted some type of floating shelves, but I didn't want the ones that stick out really far.
I kind of got to the point that I just decided to make my own because I couldn't find what I was looking for.
One day, however, I was wandering through Hobby Lobby and I spotted these bad boys.
This is exactly what I was envisioning for my wall.
I snatched them up (with my 40% off coupon of course) and headed home.

I got two shelves, one is 12" and the other is 7".
I lightly sanded them, and then painted them white using two coats of paint.
I originally had purchased a few small items to go on the shelves, but I ended up taking everything back. The items just didn't work.
I decided to look through some boxes that I knew had a few things in, and I went from there.
Let's take a closer look, shall we?
The vase is from Argentina, I believe it's clay, it belonged to my husbands' grandparents.
The bird is from Portugal, my father-in-law got it for us while visiting his family there.
The white porcelain temple is the Salt Lake Temple, and I actually made that at an activity way back when I was a teenager.
The oval frame is from Hobby Lobby. I was going to put something in there...but I kind of like it empty, we'll see if that changes though...

On this side we have a rectangle frame from Hobby Lobby. The picture inside is from Argentina. My husband, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, her husband, and myself were able to go there about 7 years ago. My husband and I purchased this painting from an artist on the street in La Boca. The colorful buildings are in the background and in the front is a couple dancing the Argentine tango.
The glass vase is from one of the many times my husband brought me flowers, and I found the three sticks at a park by our house. I like how they add some height.
The two wooden blocks under the vase are leftover pieces of a 2x4 that I painted different shades of blue and slightly distressed.
The bird cage is from Hobby Lobby, and last but not least we have a matè (mah-tay) gourd and bombilla (straw) representing Argentina as well. (We actually drink matè every morning).
Here is a view from further back so you can get a better idea of how this breaks up the blank space a little.
I hope you enjoyed and were able to receive a little decorating inspiration!

  5. Very pretty! You really made these your own style. I love the fact that it's so simple and anyone could adjust it to their own style, too.
